Future Plans - Details

Permanent link to archive for 3/8/02. Friday, March 8, 2002

I promised details. Here they are!

The cool technology in question is the Attribute Search Engine from Macrobyte Resources. The AttSearchEngine is the brainchild of noted Frontier developer Seth Dillingham. The code is clean, the architecture is well-planned, scalable and extensible.

The ASE will replace the guts of indexing in the Metadata Plugin. Because this is a layer beneath what the user actually sees, there should be no apparent change for users, other than that noncached queries on large data sets should be faster than they are now. However, because of the different internal architecture, it is likely that installing version 5.0 of the plugin will be more than a simple root update. We'll try to make it as painless as possible.

An important benefit that we get from the ASE is typed fields. You will now be able to define a metadata field as a date type, for example. This means that we'll be able to have date range searching, among other things.

One thing that the ASE does not have that we already do is hierarchical indexing. We'll have to work on that.

I'm describing future plans here, not an imminent release. It will take us a while to do the transplant. But it'll be worth it.
