Flat index caching

Permanent link to archive for 8/4/02. Sunday, August 4, 2002

The focus of the next release is speed improvement. Step one was to move the building of linked titles inside the default formatter and optimize it. On my development box I've seen as much as a 50% speed improvement for queries with large numbers of hits.

Step two is to cache flat indices intelligently. This is currently working on my machine and after a little more testing I'll check it in. The secret is to cache flat indices on a meta type basis and to only force a rebuild when poking a meta value returns true (i.e., a value has changed). This dramatically improves the building of dropboxes in metadata forms. And it's transparent, so any script calling keyIndex.buildIndexWithValues will see the speed improvement with no changes.
